The changes associated with chronic pain not only result in stress for the patient, but for their family as well. This can lead to negative changes in marriages and families. Patients can be referred to a clinician at the EMP for marital and family therapy.
Patients can be referred for individual therapy. This can include medication management or psychotherapy for a mood or anxiety disorder. To date, there is no significant evidence demonstrating the efficacy of individual therapy for the treatment of chronic pain.
Some patients who could benefit from a multidisciplinary pain management program are unable to attend. Barriers include distance, work, and language. Under these circumstances, an individualized multidisciplinary program is developed. Typically these programs include input for EMPs physician, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, social worker and nurse practitioner
.
Patients often have co-morbid mood or anxiety disorders. Research evidence has demonstrated that individual therapy can be the primary method of treatment. Individual therapy for these health related problems is available at the EMP with our well trained staff.
